Metropolis (1996) - Tübingen

Founded in August 1996, Metropolis was a German-speaking online community and one of the earliest attempts to build a social platform in the burgeoning DACH internet scene—long before the era of Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok.

Another standout feature of the online community was 'Meinewelt' (MyWorld), which allowed users to design their own homepages without any prior technical knowledge. This was an early iteration of the personalized profiles now standard on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn.
With over 1.5 million registered members, Metropolis.de was one of the largest German online communities of the late 1990s. As a social media and online community pioneer at the turn of the millennium, the platform anticipated many ideas and features that have since become industry standards.
